After three and a half years as the first full-time executive director for Communicators for Women Religious (CWR), Nicholas T. Schafer will leave the position to serve in a restorative justice ministry in Chicago.

The CWR board of directors has accepted his resignation, effective Nov. 16, while expressing deep appreciation for his dedication to advancing the mission of Catholic Sisters and his work to position CWR solidly for the future.

During Schafer’s tenure as executive director, CWR implemented a new three-year strategic plan to position the organization for continued growth. Schafer established an organizational infrastructure including opening an office in Chicago, adding two highly capable staff members, and strengthening collaborative relationships with other organizations that support the mission of women religious. Most recently, this work resulted in the book Communicating the Mission Globally: Communications Manual for Institutes of Women Religious, a collaborative publication of CWR, the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), and Multimedia International with the help of the United States Embassy to the Holy See.

“It has been an honor to work with CWR and to build upon its members’ 25 years of selfless service to the message of hope that women religious bring into the world,” Schafer said.

Schafer has accepted the role of Director of Mission Advancement for the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation. He has been affiliated with the ministry’s sponsor, Missionaries of the Precious Blood, for over a decade.

The board has developed an interim plan that includes a search for a new executive director and will keep the CWR membership updated about the transition plan.
